The Penguin Cafe Orchestra-Telephone and Rubber Band

(via @maguiretim)

Following on from the comments in the previous Dock delivery on Vodafone’s mobile symphony, Tim Maguire put us onto the Penguin Cafe Orchestra as (possible) musical inspiration behind the idea.

The PCO may also be the inspiration behind lots of other rubber band music too.

A Growing Pile of Work.

This is a video that is made from over 400 images that I created from 2003-2009. Bits and pieces from commercial, rejected and personal projects. I had been collecting all those images to use in a completely different project, but then discovered that they could look great in animation too. After painful days in After Effects, fighting with all those 400 layers (and nearly killing my computer), the video was complete.

By Siggi Eggertsson.

Humanology.

The best head scratchingly good video you’ll see today. Or your cash money back.

All credits to the Scratch Perverts for the music, beat box legend Schlomo for the beats, and Chris Cairns for the video.

The Cybraphon

A music machine that responds to social media interaction, designed and built in Edinburgh.

Inspired by early 19th century mechanical bands such as the nickelodeon, Cybraphon is an interactive version of a mechanical band in a box. Consisting of a series of robotic instruments housed in a large display case, Cybraphon behaves like a real band. Image conscious and emotional, the band’s performance is affected by online community opinion as it searches the web for reviews and comments about itself 24 hours a day.

Our words simply can’t do its brilliance justice. Get the lowdown from the inventors themselves below or find out more at Cybraphon.com.

Ashley Walters (Asher D - So Solid Crew)

Two Revolutionary Music Services

… which aren’t LastFM or Spotify.

TenTracks

Edinburgh’s very own solution to the music industry crisis. Pick a music channel, then get ten hand-picked tracks for a measly £1. For a tenner you get a years subscription of 10 tracks a month. Simple.

Musicovery

An interactive webRadio hybrid of MusicPlasma and Pandora. Start by selecting a style, then play around with the mood matrix to get your tunes of choice. Bit of a pain that you can’t forward tracks you don’t like unless you’re premium, but the data visualization of it all more than makes up for the inconvenience. Music selection just went 3D (or maybe more like 2.5D)

Global Album Cover Directory

Word Magazine’s Album Atlas is a truly brilliant use of crowdsourcing for music lovers.

Find album covers shot near you, discover where album covers were shot for your favourite bands, or even submit your own.

Here’s the nearest one to Leith, whoever Dick Gaughan is…
