Blip Together
Creating a mass online movement is far easily said than done. But not for local Leith start-up and recent Scottish Bafta award winners Blipfoto, whose simple photo-a-day blog has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. And even more so with a recent mass photo campaign driven by its members.
A single post from a member (inspired by another member Twigs) proposed that for the next few days people post pictures of their arms outstretched, to join into a giant chain of fellow blippers. The response was overwhelming, with over 1000 submissions in a few days, an app to display them, a local event in Edinburgh at InSpace and global streaming across the web.
A simple idea, a bit of creativity, some easy-to-use tech and an inspired community - blipping awesome. And a great example of how customers / clients / members / users / real people are often the greatest sources of innovation inspiration.

Great social media slideshow find by marketingbarista:

Excellent presentation for companies looking to market via social media tools. Tip? Don’t “market” to your audience, interact.

Following our recent post about brand engagement, the publishers of the report have created an interactive ranking tracker on how major brands succeed in engaging with their customers across multiple channels.
It’s a stark indication of the differences between brands that do it well and ones that do it badly, and helps clarify, if further evidence is still needed, that a social media strategy is no longer a nice-to-have, but a must-have.

Social Media - What the F**k!

Read a great presentation on Slide Share about Social Media, loads of mind-blowing facts and figures, addressing the question of whether it makes sense from a financial viewpoint to get involved in social media.

As the presentation says, “WTF” - being involved in social media is going to be part of the future marketing and media mix, just like PR, customer service etc are. Plus there’s no point in getting too hung up about return on investment - after all, it’s pretty tough to prove the ROI of a PR campaign, but that doesn’t stop it being a really powerful tool

What the F**K is Social Media: One Year Later

And have a laugh maybe just like I did about slide 2!

The Cybraphon

A music machine that responds to social media interaction, designed and built in Edinburgh.

Inspired by early 19th century mechanical bands such as the nickelodeon, Cybraphon is an interactive version of a mechanical band in a box. Consisting of a series of robotic instruments housed in a large display case, Cybraphon behaves like a real band. Image conscious and emotional, the band’s performance is affected by online community opinion as it searches the web for reviews and comments about itself 24 hours a day.

Our words simply can’t do its brilliance justice. Get the lowdown from the inventors themselves below or find out more at Cybraphon.com.

Most Engaged Brands On Social Media

Fascinating and in-depth look at the use of social media for customer engagement.

No surprise that media and technology companies are leading the way, but interesting to see other large brands establishing a successful social web presence.

Good examples cited include MyStarbucksIdea from Starbucks and IdeaStorm from Dell, both (albeit tentative) explorations into customer-led innovation, but there’s also a wealth of exploration into the real value of two-way conversation.

And judging by the response it’s got from TechCrunch, GuardianTech etc, it’s a clear sign that social media engagement is moving from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a ‘must-have’ for brands large and small.
